Then from 2003-2006, she was as an Institute of Physics (IOP) Teacher Network Co-ordinator with responsibility for Merseyside, providing training for teachers of physics. She now works as an Education Consultant to university science outreach projects. Ann is passionate about communicating physics to increase the interest of young people, particularly girls, in science and she has an international reputation for outreach – e.g. in 2011she accepted invitations to speak in Canada, South Africa and Switzerland. Her experience includes working with researchers at the University of Sheffield, where she developed the presentations for the Physicists in Primary Schools Project; an enduring resource on the Institute of Physics (IOP) website. She also trained physicists across the UK to visit primary schools.

Ann is a member of the Board of Administration of the European Platform of Women Scientists and leads their interest in encouraging girls into physics. When she was chair of the IOP Women in Physics Group she set up the Very Early Career Young Woman Physicist of the Year Award which promotes careers open to young physicists and provides inspiring role models. As a consequence of her wide knowledge of women-in-physics issues, Ann has represented the UK at all four IUPAP international conferences on women in physics.

Ann has been a member of the Institute of Physics Council, and also chair of the IOP Nations and Regions Board, the Women in Physics Group and the Merseyside Branch. These elected positions combined with her professional roles have provided her with an extensive network of contacts across the UK science community.

She was awarded an MBE in 2007 Queen’s Birthday Honours List for “services to physics”.

Physics in Primary Schools (PIPS):

Free fun physics for young children.
